CalTravel's "Three Minute Advocate"
3 Minute Advocate

Advocacy Overview

CalTravel is the unified voice dedicated to tackling the political issues facing California’s travel and tourism industry. By advocating directly to the state legislature, local and federal officials, business and the public, we address a host of concerns that affect our state’s tourism industry both directly and indirectly. CalTravel is also committed to ensuring funding for the California Travel and Tourism Commission (CTTC).

California’s travel-related businesses employ nearly 1 million Californians directly and contribute approximately $1.9 billion in local taxes and $3.4 billion in state taxes. Because the tourism industry is California’s fourth largest employer and fifth largest contributor to the gross state product, CalTravel’s political influence is essential to maintaining the industry’s strength. Through a combined effort with CalTravel’s lobbyist, our dynamic Government Relations Committee, as well as our innovative Ambassador Program, CalTravel actively engages in a variety of policy areas and keeps its members fully informed on industry issues. Boasting a vast array of members, CalTravel works tirelessly to protect and promote the diverse areas of the travel and tourism industry. We also strive to connect our members with their local, state and federal representatives in an effort to promote strong and lasting relationships through grassroots advocacy programs. CalTravel is on the forefront of protecting the state’s tourism industry from harmful legislation regarding employee work hours, onerous business requirements, industry-specific tax increases and other burdens, while also taking a proactive approach on significant issues through supporting and sponsoring legislation that encourages a unique and more robust travel and tourism industry.

In addition to providing effective representation for the travel industry through legislative, administrative and regulatory advocacy, CalTravel regularly partners with other groups and associations to further support its mission. CalTravel has partnered with the California Chamber of Commerce, the California State Parks Foundation, the California Alliance for Hospitality Jobs, the California Attractions and Parks Association, California’s Retail and Restaurant Associations, the California Hotel and Lodging Association, the California Lodging Industry Association, the California Ski Industry Association, the California Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds and the California Travel and Tourism Commission, among others. Through such collaborative efforts, CalTravel can better deliver an exceptional California experience.
