Summer Sizzle for CalTravel
by John Severini, CalTravel President & CEO, Membership Committee Chair

That's right... we are now in the busiest time of the year for us with a variety of huge events and activities heating up as we approach summer.

First, we've completed our membership campaign that "officially" ended April 15. Our cruise contest which awarded a free luxury Azamara Cruise for two to the member who referred the highest number of new members has concluded... we have a winner. However, first let me share with you some of the results. read more...

A message from our Chairman
by Susie Santo, CalTravel Chairman

My tenure as your Chairman of the Board is coming to a close. This year our key objectives were to raise the bar on our advocacy efforts and increase our membership base and benefits. It has been an extremely rewarding year and I am proud of our many successes. We've elevated our advocacy efforts to an all-time high. But we can't stop here. Currently, we are facing many advocacy issues that may impact our organizations. We must continue to be diligent in our efforts to ensure our voice is heard and that our industry remains healthy. read more...

CalTravel Ambassador Program Update
by Jerri Harris and Richard Peterson, CalTravel Ambassador Co Chairs

As we turn the corner for the 30th annual California Travel Summit the Cal Travel Ambassadors are ready for action from conference start to finish. Our goal for 2012 is to make each attendee's experience unforgettable and to initiate a long and prosperous relationship with CalTravel. Ambassadors will all be in attendance for the New Attendee/Member Session Monday at 11am, ready to meet each new member and make connections in their respective regions. Monday, at the opening session of the Summit, all Ambassadors will be on hand to meet and greet and be introduced personally to everyone. Throughout the Summit, Ambassadors will be available at the door of sessions as well as throughout all activities for questions and connections with attendees. Ambassadors will provide the personal touch for all and, within their regions, enable CalTravel to remain a true grass roots organization as relationships are encouraged to grow and build throughout the year. read more...

California Budget and Legislation
by Tami Miller, Political Solutions

California's budget trouble continues as the state's deficit rests at approximately $10 billion through June 2013. The Governor's proposed budget makes $4.2 billion in spending reductions, primarily to welfare and Medi-Cal. In an effort to close the remaining deficit, Governor Brown has also proposed a temporary tax increase which is expected to generate nearly $7 billion per year. The Governor has suggested a quarter cent sales and use tax increase (until 2016) and an increase on Californians earning more than $250,000 (until 2018). To avoid legislative battles over tax increases, the Governor has opted to submit his tax package as an initiative for the 2012 General Election. The "Schools and Local Public Safety Protection Act of 2012 (V3)" will require a simple majority of voters to pass as opposed to the nearly impossible two-thirds vote by the Legislature. If the Governor's tax package does not pass, Governor Brown will be forced to make further reductions to K-12 and higher education. read more...
